Adult ADHD Assessment
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Although ADHD is often diagnosed in childhood, sometimes it is missed leading to struggles in adulthood, such as difficulty achieving life goals, being distracted by everyday things, missing deadlines at work, and maintaining good relationships.
There are different types of ADHD which include:
- ADHD Inattentive Type – difficulty with sustained focus, organization, following through, and forgetfulness
- ADHD Hyperactive/Impulsive Type – restlessness, fidgeting, excessive talking and interrupting others
- ADHD Combined Type – a mix of both inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive type symptoms
What does an ADHD Assessment involve?
ADHD assessments include an in-depth clinical interview to collect relevant history, the administration of standardized questionnaires, gathering of collateral information, and a feedback session. Additional screening for conditions often associated with ADHD is included, such as depression and anxiety.
Treating ADHD
Treatment of ADHD typically includes medication and/or psychological counselling. A combination of these is often the most effective treatment. Counselling typically focuses on education, as well as skill building such as time management, planning, organization, and stress management. It can also help with managing emotions better and reducing impulsivity. Further, through counselling one can process the emotional experience that may accompany living with ADHD.
Although ADHD cannot be cured, when individuals learn to manage their symptoms many aspects of life can become easier and more rewarding.
